Welcome to Winding wood
An Organic and Biodynamic Vineyard
We are a boutique, organic vineyard situated in the beautiful west corner of Berkshire between Hungerford and Newbury. The vines are planted on free draining loam over flint and chalk. Our wine is made from the classic Champagne varieties and undergoes the Traditional Method of two fermentations: the first in oak barrel and the second in the bottle. We age our wines for a minimum of 24 months on their lees before disgorging. This is then followed by 6 months resting on cork before release. The watchword is: fruit always comes first.
At the end of 2024, after a three-year conversion, we became both organic and Demeter certified – only one of a small handful of vineyards in England and Wales. We embrace a biodynamic approach towards both the land & vines, and our winemaking. This means using regenerative methods at all times: no tilling under the vine, always striving to improve soil biology, employing no synthetic chemicals; and using plants that contain medicinal properties to make teas for spraying over our vines. The goal: to build up the vine’s resistance to disease. Ask Mr Mole about the soil, he loves all the bugs and insects.
Our Wines & Our Awards
WineGB Awards 2024 – gold medal and Trophy Best Sparkling Rosé for our Rosé 2020, Gold Medal for our Brut Reserve 2018 (now sold out)
IEWA (Independent English Wine Awards) 2024 –Gold medal and Trophy Top Sparkling Wine in competition.
Winner of a gold medal in the Independent English Wine Awards 2022 for our 2018 brut rosé and a gold in the WineGB 2020 for our 2016 classic cuvée brut.
Our wines are proudly biodynamic, from vineyard to winery. We only make vintage wines and our wines sell out every year. We have gathered a loyal following in both private and restaurant sectors, but being a boutique operation, demand outstrips supply. If you are keen to secure an allocation, consider joining our Wine Club.
The Winding Wood Brut Reserve is made from a blend of Pinot noir and Chardonnay, typically with a majority Pinot.
Our Brut Rosé is our most highly awarded wine and is achieved by assemblage with a small amount of Pinot noir red wine, made form our best grapes.
We also offer a Demi-Sec - a medium sweet wine that is a surprise favourite among many of our guests.
Our wine is made for us by Daniel Ham of Offbeat Wines. Read more about Daniel & Offbeat here.
